Our next Concert

The St. Louis Womens Chorale

Please join us for our next scheduled performance at Sheldon Hall on May 1, 2012 at 7:30 PM.

We invite you to join us on Tuesday, May 1st at the Sheldon Concert Hall for our concert entitled “Voice of the Spirit,” which is a wonderful program of folk music, spirituals, and poems. Folk music is truly “music of the people.” Usually, the origin of the music is unknown, as it was typically transmitted orally through the lower classes, which did not have the ability or the means to transcribe the melodies and texts. However, many people believe that the purpose of African-American spirituals went beyond expressing emotions and entered a realm of secretive communication. Songs such as “Wade In The Water” provided literal instructions to fugitive slaves on how to avoid capture and the route to take to successfully make their way to freedom. The very title is advice to runaway slaves to stay in the water to avoid being tracked by bloodhounds. Through the study and performance of these types of songs, we learn volumes about our heritage, the human condition, and how much we all have in common. Our program on May 1st will cover a broad spectrum of emotions and messages through musical styles that will range from soulful spirituals to rollicking fiddle tunes. Our music will awaken your senses, stimulate your mind, and feed your soul. So please join us for an evening at the Sheldon as we give a voice to our spirit.
